OK, so I'm bought a 400, that is bored .30 over. My question is: What heads can I use on a budget with a TPI setup? I don't want to make the compreshion too high, but enough to make some good power. If I have to drill steam holes, can I do it myself, and what cam would give the best HP, without making it too rough for the FI? Thanks for any opinion that you might be able to offer!

you can buy vortecs and have to lower your CR. or you can buy any head and buy the "adapted" tpi base from scroggin-dickey. you may still have to lower your CR though.

The 400 is a pain to keep down on CR unless you run the 76cc heads. But have fun finding the ones you want. You will probally have to buy the smaller cc heads and dished pistons. That is what I am doing. But I am also going to 5.7" rods.

 

A set of 441X or 487x would have the chamber size
and performance your looking for.
They will allow pump gas with flat top pistons on a 400.
Yes you can drill these heads yourself.
You may find the steam holes already there as these
are 400 heads.

A decent porting job combined with 2.02's and 1.60 valves
will do nicely.
Select a cam shaft based on duration @.050" that matches your
planed rpm power band range.
