I just put the GMPP Fastburn aluminum heads on my 406. As far as I know you must use a Vortec intake. I switched from a TPI setup to those heads, Victor Vortec Race intake and a 850DP and I gained about 17mph in the quarter and shaved off a full second according to a G-tech run. I will be taking it to the track on September 8th so I will have some hard numbers then. The exhaust ports are large D shaped ports so check to see if you headers will match up OK. Other than that she pulls hard up to 6K where the rev limiter is set now.
Fast burn heads are just chambers that have placed the spark plug further into the middle of the chamber; thus creating a more efficient and 'faster' burn. A lot of GM's heads moved to the fast burn chambers after the mid 80's. Here's a two pics to show you the protruding spark plug in a 'fast burn' setup. The '416's on the left have the non-'fast-burn' chambers. And the '187's on the right have the 'fast-burn chambers. Note the spark plug protrustion.
