88 GTA MAF Woes (who doesn't)
88 GTA MAF Woes (who doesn't)
I recently purchased a 1988 GTA 5.7L with 38K miles. The car was not driven much, and has a few mods - Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, new style intake manafolds (not sure of brand), flowmaster exhaust, and possible performance chip (have not verified by looking in ECM).
I'm not interested in getting the max performance from the car, but I would like to get the max reliability. This brings me to my problem.
The previous owner had a few problems with the car running, so the ECM was replaced along with the MAF unit (BOSCH is on it now). It ran fine until yesterday when starting it to back out of the garage. It started, but stumbled with very rough idle and Check Engine was lit. I was told that if a problem came up to "tap" the MAF unit and re-start the car. I did this, and the car started fine and Check Engine was not lit (no code stored I guess).
Do I have bad connectors at the MAF? Is the MAF bad? Would any of the mods that were done to the car be causing a MAF problem? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is my daily driver and I need it to run 100%.
Thanks.....
Aaron

More than likley modding the car will not have any adverse effects on the MAF, unless someone hacked into the wiring.
I've not heard of tapping the MAF to fix a problem...but only to tap on the MAF while the engine is running to see if the engine stumbles.
You may very well have a connector problem, pull the MAF and look into the wiring connector going to the MAF as well as the pins inside the MAF end.
Another thing is to pull the codes, look at the main page at www.thirdgen.org under the Tech Articles for HOW TO, and verify an actual MAF code is being set.
