Steering wheel removal
Steering wheel removal
I need help getting the steering wheel off my 88 sports coupe, I want to change the horrible OE and I need to sort out the left hand stalk, the cruise control only works with the wipers on!. The problem is the wheel is stuck fast and I cant a puller to fit as I live in England and all our threads are metric and do not fit the two tapped holes in the boss, any suggestions?

Can you get all the stuff out of the way on the wheel so you can see the big nut that holds it on the shaft? if so take that off, there should be a dimple in the end of the shaft, get a long punch with a blunt rounded end and a big hammer (a small sledge, maybe) set the punch in that dimple and give it a few good wacks...you may need to have someone else wiggle or pull on the wheel while you pound it.
Sounds nuts, but it works...pulled my share of steering wheels without pullers

do you have the lock plate removed? if so the wheel isn't really pressed on, but more of a real tight fit. i would think some how some where you could find a couple of american thread bolts, but then again i never tried looking for them in england. i believe you want 5/16-18 by what ever length you need.
Lightly spray the stud with WD-40. Put the nut back on about 1-2 threads. Brace your legs in the firewall and grasp wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock. PULL AS HARD AS YOU CAN and wiggle back and forth. It'll pop right off.
