Re-assembling engine

Ok, engine reassembly time and I've got some questions for everyone. First off, what kind of sealer do you guys recommend? Regular ol RTV or anything special? Second, do you use sealer on everything?...heads to block?..headers to heads? Third, this is going to sound silly but my header gaskets have 1 silvery side, does this side face the heads or the headers? And last, but not least, If someone could tell me how many head bolts of each length I'm supposed to have It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

just use the sealer on the intake manifold and the oil pan main seal. dont use it onthe heads and headers. its not needed and will just make an extra mess especially when the headers turn it into gooy stuff

AS for the number of head bolts (per head), there should be:

8 Short
2 Medium length
7 Long

AS for rtv I like the black rtv, It's a little thicher and stickier than standard rtv. Also has a higher heat capability.

the sealer you use depends partly in the gaskets you use. i use one piece oil pan gaskets, nothing on the block and ultracopper on the pan, same with valve cover gaskets. use k&w copper spray on head gaskets and long intake gaskets. i use high tack on the china walls with gaskets and the intake if the engine's on a stand ,if it's in a car i use ultracopper and no gasket. use high tack on the block for the timing cover gasket and ultracopper on the cover. use high tack on the water pump gaskets. use loctite PST on the head, water pump, and intake bolts. ultracopper on the 5 main cap. permatex avaition form a gasket on the outter edge of oil seals and assembly lube on the inner lip.

Thank you very much for all the info. Any ideas about that header gasket? Silvery side faces the headers or heads?
