Engine Suffix Code

I got the engine suffix code off of the pad in front of my passenger cylinder bank, It is V10205ZC. I purchased my car about 2 months ago and am still unsure which motor it is... Is is the stock 305 or something else??? Thnanks!

Who knows... that code describes what the motor was when it was built, not what it is now... if somebody changed the block, who knows whether they re-used the heads that came on whatever block it is or put the original ones from the car back on, or changed the cam, or any of that, any of which would render the motor's origins a mere historical curiosity with no particular connection to physical reality... and since they're just stamped, if somebody bought an Auto Zone reman motor or something that had been decked, they could have just copied the stamping from the original motor onto the mutt they got from the rebuilder, and then you'd really be out in the ozone...

Look at the other string of stamped numbers, those are the production sequence part of the car it was installed in; if they match your VIN, it's the original motor from your car (or somebody went to the trouble of stamping them there).

You'll get a whole lot more useful info from casting numbers on the block and the heads than you will out of those stampings. The casting numbers won't tell you anything about the car the motor came from, but they will tell you with absolute, unalterable certainty what the motor is built out of, which is actually useful info unlike the stampings. Get those numbers and post them, they are readily identifiable.

I was under the impression that the suffix code WAS stamped on the block itself, It's stamped on the head? I cannot see the casting numbers on the rear of the block so that won't work either.

OK I finally found the casting #. It was on the passengers side of the block on the back ledge. BUT that leads to another question. The casting # is 14093627 which IS a 305 BUT that is an 88 305 with a roller cam if I'm not mistaken. So apparently someone went through the effort of swapping in another 305? BTW my car is an 86.

Thats the casting number on my block too. The motor is from an 87 firebird. I don't know what my motor is either so if anyone can answer this you would be helping me to. BTW the casting # on my heads is 14101081. Thanks!
