i put the fuel pump on and it still does the same thing. when i squirt starting fluid down the carb it revs up and runs better, does it need a new carb?

fire it up in the dark and look under the hood. see if your coil is leaking. or other ign stuff.

could be a sign for a new tune up.

a 79 305 and my 86 2.8 have both done that, acting up for no reason.

It was not the coil but just needing a *** tune up, even when it was not time for a tune up. on the 79 I changed everything and then thrw in some cheap champion plugs and vroom vroom

I have a pretty similar problem on my bird, i changed plugs/cap/rotor/wires/o2 sensor most haven suggested a clogged cat. or restricted exhaust, i even done a fuel pressure check w/ the gauge which came up normal if you figure it out please let me know what it was.
