Bottom End Rebuild!

What is the average price for a bottom end rebuild of a small block chevy 305? just a rebuild with new rings and gaskets along with a new oil pump? any ideas?

If you are asking which one you should rebuild, I think you will be much happier with a 350. They have much more potential for cheaper. Go with the 350 or you will be sorry later. Just my opinion.

Why sacrafice the extra cubes? Get a 350, it's proven and theres tons of parts out there for it.

its a 87 Trans Am LG4 305. Auto.

I have one thousand dollars.
I have a compleate 305 (in the car)
I have a bare 350 block (on the stand)

Now i can take this thousand dollars and build the bottom end of the 350, or i can take the money and get a bottom end rebuild and a good set of heads with a new cam. then save some more and get some headers along with a new intake and carb.. so on...

I'm thinking build the 305 since i'm going to have to buy half the parts and will have it done a lot sooner than i would withthe 350. plus this car is going to remain my daily driver.

If you look in a jegs or summit magizine most of the bolt ons and parts say SMALL BLOCK CHEVY... not just a SBC 350. besides pistons, there really isnt any difference in price for a cam or a head for a 305 vs. a 350. i dont see why everyone says a 350 is so much cheaper! the 350 might have more power in the long run... but lets face it when your walking thru the car show everyone have a fast 350... how many time do you see a bad @$$ 305???

either way this thing is going to be quick, just depends on if i want it done this year or next.

you are in the perfect position to build the 350. keep the 305 in the car and use it as a daily driver until you finish building the 350. don't go through the trouble of pulling your 305 to build it up when you can finish the 350 and swap it in at your leisure.

I agree with rancid. That is a very good idea. I really wouln't waste my time with the 305 if you are looking for good power. Plus you could just take your time and build it right.
