Am I really running lean?

I'm at college and the car is at home in my brother's care. After the new cam/intake install, I was wondering if I might be running lean due to my poor track times, eventhough I found out some other reasons.

Well, my brother cleaned the spark plugs and ran the car, said he took some out and the car is running lean. Can you really tell just by having the car run for a little while in the driveway, and not taking it out on the street.

I'm thinking about getting a jet kit for the 600cfm carb I have.

Your brother needs to "Cool His Jets"....

There is no way he could deterrmine if the jetting is lean or rich
or just right by running the car in the driveway.

Idling has to do with the idle circuit, not the jetting.

Unleaded gas takes a while to color the plugs.

Even at that the color of the plugs doesn't tell you about wether
the motor need larger or smaller jetting.

As long as there are no signs of overheating the electrodes
or detonation, it is not too lean.

When the jetting is right the porcelon may be bone white and the threads (metal part) dark carbon soot.

In time the plugs will color, this is from fuel additives
not the jetting.

If you find the "jetting is lean" at wot, insure that your fuel system is up to the task of delivering enough fuel to the carb
(volume not pressure) to feed the motor, before you start messing with the main jetting.

If you want to adjust the jetting you have to go to the drag strip or on a dyno and adjust till you get max power (MPH)
@wot and or correct AFR on a guage @ part throttle cruise.

At any rate the stock jetting on a 600 cfm Edelbrock will be real close.

If in fact you do have a severe lean condition at idle I'd suspect a manifold leak, not too lean jetting.

Well, my car has been running hot up to 230* almost at the track, and I have a 160* stat and al radiator, but the timing was set accurately either which is fixed now.

Out of curiosity, what was your track time after the cam swap?
