service engine soon light

hey, this may seem like a waste of time to some people....ive got an 88 iroc and i dont have the best car history. my car runs great with the exeption of a large amount of exhaust when i start it up...i guess it is a valve seal or piston ring problem or whatever...people say that its not really worth looking into until its a problem...tonight i started my car and my "service engine soon" light was on...this makes me instantly very nervous because i love my car like a son and dont want anything wrong with it. this may not matter but i was fooling around with the computer wireing under the dash...i didnt unplug anything, i was just looking (with my hands)...other than that, i have no idea...the car runs great....could the light mean that my oil buring problem needs attention? or any other ideas for the stupid guy (myself)...i dont like taking it to a garage, i wanna do what i can myself so im asking, anyone have any guesses or know how i can find out or what to check. I know this is kinda a stupid thing to ask u guys but id appreciate any help...thanks a lot

Withou the diagnostic tools it's difficult to answer your question. A service engine soon light is an error code. More than that I can't really tell you. IT could anything. Any number of sensors for any number of things. Some things could be fixed with an adjustment. It's hard to say.

This Page has a list of all the error codes, as well as how to get the codes using a high-tech code reader (paper clip ) at the bottom of the page.

I have no idea as to why the Check Engine would stay on when the car is off though

im sure im retarded but i cant get ur link to open so i can read it...i dunno if this could have anything to do with the light problem but when i start my car up, it usually idles at just above 500 rpm, and it seems to now start and go to 550ish then if i dont drive right away, the engine starts struggling and shuttering like the rpms are too low and them it goes up to 1000 and idles there...? maybe this is a topic for a new thread...thanks

Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, or else you won't be able to view that page...
