bad fuel pump?
bad fuel pump?
car is an 89 305tbi
after i filled up at the gas station, it would not start. i noticed no fuel going to the TBI. and i could hear no sound coming from the fuel pump when i turn the key.
after a few hours it starts up and i drive it home just fine.
next day, i start it and it sputters badly, but is fine at higher rpms.
few hours later nothing again.-no sound at all from fuel pump, and nothing coming out of TBI.
i dont like this motor and do not want to put any significant money into this stock 305.
does this sound like bad fuel pump, or could it be something electrical?
also, would a stock fuel pump be enough for an LT1s fuel needs?

Make sure to check your fuel pump fuse and relay. Sounds like the fuel pump going to me. My car does the same thing. I would try to start and it and it would start then die. If I gave it gas it would run but as soon I let off the car would die. The fuel pump is making a jingling noise on my car as well which lets me know its going.
all the fuses at the fuse block are OK. ill have to look for the fuel pump relay though.
is there a difference between a 305tbi and a 350tpi fuel pump. i asked for one from a 350tpi at the parts store, $50 lifetime warranty. and pick it up tommorow.
or i could order a Granetelli 255g/h fuel pump for 120, no warranty, and have to wait 3-4-5 days to get it.

305/350 TBI - needs around 14lbs pressure
305/350 TPI - needs around 45lbs pressure (LT1 about same)

ok, so im going to get the fuel pump for a tpi then. i should have no problems, it will be regulated and the excess fuel will be sent back to the tank correct? then i should not have to worry about needing any more fuel in the future, i hope.
i would also like to check the fuel pump relay, but cant find it. its not in my chiltons book, and i dont see it around the fuse block.
could it be way up the dash, near the fuel pump, or around the engine?
thanks guys,

If it's the same layout as mine The fuel pump relay is in the engine compartment driver's side next to the brake servo. There should be three relays - fuel pump / maf sensor and maf burnoff - the two maf relays will have the same part numbers. Hope you have some luck - I'm still trying to figure out my fuel problem
