Update on problem.
Ok without the rocker arms on cyclinder #1 i have compression so the valves were being pushed down. The compression is 220ish. Another valve was 182...isnt that to far apart? Also #1s valves werent that tight...i could twist the pushrod and jiggle the rocker arm. Also the lifters appear to be working because the pushrods are going up and down.
Ok that takes care of one problem but should i still pull the head to see what that awful noise was? what should I do know?

compression sounds about right. Thats a bit of a difference but not horrible. As for the sound, pull the intake and check the lifters. Check for the circular wear pattern on the bottom of the lifters (could be collapsed lifter, esp if not spinning). Can't remember what exactly your problem was but I have a faint idea. Check springs for bind, studs (if there pressed one could have pulled out), and see if your rocker geometry is right. Also not sure what all you have but make sure your rocker hasn't been bottoming out. Too much cam lift on too light of a spring can cause problems.
