Code 36 Causing Rough Conditions!?

I have an '87 IROC with a 305 (F) & 700-R4. When my SES light first came on about a month or so ago, it was telling me Code 33(MAF Sensor) & Code 36 (MAF Burn-Off Relay). I replaced the MAF Sensor, and the 33 went away. Now, I am only getting the Code 36 continuously. It comes on about 2 seconds after I start the car, and stays on until I shut it off. The problems I am having is that it tends to die coming to a dead stop, when going down the road & fwy., at a constant steady speed/rpm, it spudders and sometimes backfires, however, under hard excelleration it runs perfectly fine. It smells like it is running extremely rich, enough to burn your eyes after a couple minutes, and it drinks gas to approx. 150 miles per tank.

Would a simple relay not working to burn-off lint, dust, etc., cause these problems!? I am all up for any and all suggestions!
