Finally figured I should try and get this problem sorted out. My problem is that I believe my fuel gauge is off by a quarter tank. When I go to the pump, my gauge is on 'E' and i'll add a good 8-9 gallons, which is the most it will let me (i.e. the tank is full)...however when I start the car, the gauge only goes up to 3/4 of a tank.....so either my tank is not filling up completely for some reason, or the gauge is off (or sending unit is bad).

I vaguely remember this problem happening after one day when i managed to peg the fuel needle on 'E' - - had to brake real fast, and being that GM fuel gauges are real sensitive, the thing shot down to 'E' and was stuck there for a day or so :\ I remember reading somewhere you can run a voltmeter on some of the connectors at the fuelpump, but for some reason I cannot find the link on which wires to test, and what voltages to look for....anyone happen to have it??

If it is in fact that the gauge is simply off by 1/4 tank, can I just pull out the cluster, and push the needle to the correct place??

Before you go adjusting the gauge, test the connections at the fuel tank, including the ground. A poor connection will result in a low fuel reading.

You can test the gauge by groounding the 12V wire near the tank. IIRC, the wire is pink on most of our cars, but don't quote me on that since I don't have the schematics at hand. Once the wire is grounded, the gauge should go to the FULL end.

 

I just filled my tank to the top, and then pushed the needle to sit on "Full".

 

hmm my guage will go WAY past F on my guage but stops at half a tank. I think i messed the floater up when i replaced the pump. Oh well I know when i need gas because i take a turn and it tries to die LOL
