Do i NEED a valve cover breather?
I just picked up a nifty new set of valve covers, but theres no holes at all in them for any kind of pcv valve or breather. Should i start drilling some holes or will it be ok as is?

You don't absolutely have to have one, but I would recommend using one. By keeping the crankcase from building up pressure, you extend the life of your piston rings. Also, any unburnt fuel vapors that escape into the crankcase will be sucked back into the intake and burned off.

I agree you dont absolutely need one but for the reasons you had stated I thought it would be a good idea to mention it. I would never run without it myself for reasons mentioned.
The PCV is a good thing to run. However, that other breather tube that just goes to the TB straight with no valve (don't know if you have that but I know an 85 TPI car has it) can be ditched.

If you run PCV the you need both... In order for the system to work correctly the PCV also relies on the input air supply created on the other side of the valve covers " the free flow side " Under accelleration the PCV may not beable to keep up with the pressure vented to the outside so the free flow side will dump in to the intake system via air cleaner or throttle body depending on your system.. The worse the engine wears the worse it dumps...
On a new engine or an unworn engine the PVC uses the free flow side as an actual air intake so it has a place to draw from. Having no Intake air supply, it will draw from any where it can including but not always including engine oil with the mix. Don't do it.. Either have a vent to atmosphere or to the intake side.. But have one
