hooking up heater core

the previous owner disconnected the heater core hoses. im assuming they did this because they lived in a hot weather area?? and were hoping that would make a difference in cabin temp... but not sure..

to reconnect it, does it really matter where exactly the hoses come from, or as long as i put it "in-line" with the cooling system will that be ok?

also, is there an "in" and an "out" officially?

thanks,

probably bypassed it because the heater core leaks. no official in or out. but the one towards the driver's side goes to the TB and the one towards the passenger side goes tothe tube that runs along the frame on the passenger side that hooks to the radiator.

thanks, i suppose there's no way to test one for leaks, with out a) hooking it up and seeing, or b) removing it. ??

whats my chances that a boneyard one would be ok?

how expensive are these? if too much, i'll just grin and bear it during the mornings when its coolest out for a few months.

thanks.

well you could test it by hooking it up, and see if the carpet gets wet.. but if they bypassed it, it probibly don't work as for finding one at a junkyard, i wouldn't trust them.. every third gen i've ever seen has lost a heater core
and if you can get that heater core out with out removing the dash please share on how you did it (i'm still trying to get mine out without removing the dash)

had to remove the dash on mine also. there are one or two screws you can't get at unless you remove the dash. you can get a heater core for about $20-30 new. so don't bother getting one from a junkyard.

My heater core went out on me about 2 years ago, and a buddy of mine put 1 in for me from the boneyard and i havnt had any problems with it sense works fine, managed to get it in without taking the dash out, trick is to have someone looking in the engine bay to tell you when its lined up with the holes. Did manage to break some plastic crap in there so it has a tendancy to have all the hot air come out the pasanger side feet.

ok i finally got the thing pulled out. the really tough part is getting this one screw off the top of the case.

first i removed the bottom two panels on the passenger side. you can remove all the screws on the heater core cover except the top one now.

then i had to take off the dash pad and passenger speaker. i used a small 7mm wrench to get that last screw. i have long arms so i could reach up from the bottom and down from the top to do it blind. it was a PITA but i finally got it.

then there is 4 screws on the bracket and one on the left side case that you need to take out. then just wiggle out the core with the bracket included it will pull out eventually.

i gotta get a new core tomorrow and hook up new hoses but i think the difficult part is over. i dont think ill be puttin that top screw back in!!!

oh BTW i think this is only for '86 and under....
