What are the tolerances/clearances on a SBC?

I'm getting ready to assemble the bottom end for my L98. What I need to know are the clearances, like crankshaft endplay, rod side clearances and main/rod bearing clearances. If any of you know this info or have a link to it, please help me out. Any info is appreciated. Thanx.

On a street motor I usually shoot for .001"-.0015" on both main and rod bearings. Crank end play should be in the .010"-.025" range, not particularly critical, as long as there is some, but the throws don't hit the block or anything stupid like that; look for rod side clearance about .012"-.016", again not extremely critical. The crank should spin more easily as you torque the main bearings. DO NOT over-torque anything, more damage can be done this way than if they are at the low end of spec; use white lithium on the bolts as anti-seize. Only measure torque while bolts are turning: that's why I don't care for the clicker-type wrenches, I like a beam type or dial type. I usually use 65 ft-lbs on the mains, 35 on the rods. I prefer thin lube for building; either ATF or 5W-30 synthetic. Of course if you're using a flat-tappet cam, use dino juice for at least the first oil change, you can switch to synthetic after that.

you really ought to consider spending 20 dollars or so and buy a manual, never know what sort of info someone might give you on the net.

1.5 is the minimum spec according to chevy and every other engine builder, 1.0 is not reccommended

Go buy a manual or you will regret it, something that TEACHES YOU HOW TO BUILD AN ENGINE, because if you have to ask these questions you'll just **** it up!

Try Chevy Power Book, lingenfelter on SBC's or a factory shop manual.
