RPM redline
I hope these questions arn't too dumb.
1. Does anyone know what determines the redline RPM of an engine?
2. If an engine is modified can the redline RPM be increased?
If so -
3. What mods to the engine will affect the redline RPM?
Thanks,
Don

not really a dumb question. sometimes you take a beating for asking, but really there is no dumb questions. usually the red line is the limit the engine can move air in and put of the cylinders. if you manage to make an engine do this effectiently there is the mechanical limit of the parts. in effect there may be 2 red lines for every engine ,where it no longer can pump air in and out and the other where part breakage occurs. yes by making changes to an engine the red line can move around, up or down.

Ask the F-1 boys about redline. Most of your Formula 1 motors are 1.5 liter v10s with says 3 overhead cams. They reach a wall at about 20,000 RPMs were the motor can't suck anymore air in. Now back when they allowed turbo chargers there was no limit to how much air you coul shove in
