Odd Smell...No Direct Problem

I was drivin around San Diego in my stock 91 third gen 305, and everything was running good. When I ran into Target, right when I stepped out of the car, I can smell like almost an oil burning or something. But the thing is, I have smelt this since I bought it two years ago. When cruisin around town, I usually heat up to like 220 before my electric fan kicks in. Perhaps it is the engine doin its thing, or I have a serious problem? Grrr, that smell scares me. If you know what I mean, kinda like burnt oil type smell, or hot belts, or just hot components or somethin. I hope someone can relate. Should I worry, or just drive it into the ground?

Probably oil leaking from the valve covers and burning on the exhaust.

Re: Odd Smell...No Direct Problem

Don't worry, but don't drive it into the ground. Take care of your car. Even if you get tired of it, it will be worth more if you ever decide to trade.

Clean the engine and its compartment thoroughly. That should eliminate any of the rogue fluids that are dripping/burning on the engine, and should help identify the sources of the leaks. A cleaner engine is also a lot more enjoyable to work on, so fixing those leaks shouldn't be as daunting.
