When was the last time you gave the car an ignition tune up. Cap rotor wires etc? I have seen cars where the ignition was really in bad shape and this resulted in very poor combustion equalling in raw gas coming out of the exhaust. Just a suggestion

Ron,

Have you pulled the window plugs and checked the float level while the engine is running? Many times a leaking inlet needle/seat will allow an overfill of the bowls even when the dry level has been preset correctly. Just a thought.

And what model is your Holley? You might have one with idle air bleeds instead of fuel metering, like on the POS 4160s. Just another reason to find an old Carter Thermoquad (a REAL one, not Edelbrock) and rebuild it for your setup. Then again, I like trying to line up all those dip tubes, metering rods, linkages and sheot when reassembling those. It separates the men from the boys.

Under what conditions does the engine smoke and produce the rich fuel odor? Only under load? At idle? Always?

Are there any other symptoms, such as a misfire, vibration, hard starting, etc?

it smokes a little at idle the higher the rpms the more it smokes and the smoke can really burn my eyes should i consider a msd5 or msd6 ignition to boost spark in the combustion chamber thanks for any ideas this has been an ongoing probem for too long now.
