It was my understanding that all ss's came with the lt1 for the mid 90's but a friend told me only the 96 got the lt1, is this true. could some one point me to some sites that might help in this discussion.

Matt,
Except for a very few rare factory test mules that were equipped with a 454 BBC (yes, you read that right), ALL Impala SS from 1994-96 got the LT1. At least mine did - both '94 and '96.

The difference betweeen the LT1 in the 'B' car (Impala and other GMs) and those in the 'F' and 'Y' cars (Camaro/Firebird and Corvette, respectively) was the 'B' car LT1s were delivered with cast iron heads instead of aluminum. Sadly for the early FourthGens, the factory iron heads actually flowed better than the aluminums until 1996.
The other main differences between all the LT1s were camshaft specifications.

The 'B' car got a relatively mild grind, the 'F' car got and improved grind, and the 'Y' car got the most aggressive factory cams in either the LT1 or LT4. Fortunately, Comp has an easy solution to that...

But don't take my word for it. Visit the NAISSO site for all the details: http://www.impalaclub.com/naisso/home/
