will a truck oil pan work?

The engine i'm building for my car came from an 78 chevy truck. The oil pan looks a little different, so i thought i better make sure it will work in my 84 trans am. The old engines (305 lg4) oil pan was close to the cross memeber, so i don't want to drop it in and find out it wont clear it. Thanks alot.

The truck pans generally won't work in these cars or A & G bodies, the sump extends too far forward and hits the exhaust. A 2nd gen Camaro pan will work, or one out of a Chevelle or Monte Carlo or Cutlass or any such, as long as it has the driver's side dipstick. Avoid full-size cars and trucks, their frames have more room, and their pans usually won't fit these cars. I use the old Z28 pan that gives a 6-quart system, but that one requires a windage tray, it is not optional.

If the sump extended forward, wouldn't it hit the crossmember? I'm going to be using full length headmen headers with s pipes, so would that change anything? I took the trucks oil pan out to the garage and compared it to a pan i took off of a 305 i pulled from an 86 trans am. It looks identical except the dipsticks are on opposite sides.
thanks

If you use the full length headders it will work but its going to be close. Theres a 2in differece between the two pans. Some trucks came with the same small pan though.
