Serpentine Belt Change
I have heard that taking out the air pump will not effect the "check engine soon" light. With that said I plan to do an experiment on the belt sys. If I could figure out how to add an image to this text from a drawing I would show a pic, but anyhow I am planning on bypassing the a/c and air pump pulley all together and routing the new belt around the idler pulley and running it back to the alt. pulley. Has anyone tried this? Do you think it will work? To see a bad drawing of this go to my webpage and select serpentine belt experiment.

Thanks for that info! I am thinking of taking it a step further though. I already have the a/c disconnected, so I think I will use the tensioner as a 180* reverser for the belt. If that makes sense. I am going to take a measurement tomorrow and get a belt and try it if time allows.

I see what you're saying. I thought about that too but didn't see a feasible way without major changes. Remember that the flat side of the serp belt rides on the tensioner. Short of welding rails on both sides of the tensioner to keep the belt on the pulley I don't see how it would work.
That'd be one heck of a short belt to keep the proper tension.
I think it is possible though.

I wondered about that with the tensioner too but, it has a lip around the tensioner. I was worried about the belt slipping off. After seeing that lip though is when I thought it should work. I haven't had a chance today to work on the car so as soon as I do I am gonna try it out.

Well so far success, success, success. I bought a 65" belt (cheap one) pt#650k6-5060650DR, from Advance Auto. It cost me $11.99, and I routed it around the idler and back to the alt. and it ran fine. No check engine soon light or anything. I haven't taken it out on the road yet, but it seems like it is gonna do just fine. It actually seemed like it ran smoother. This could be a experiment to take to the track someday and see what kind of difference it makes to eliminate the air pump and a/c. Let me know if anyone else tries this please.

I am at work now but tomorrow I will try to post a picture. I have never posted a picture and as soon as I figure it out I promise I will get it on here.

You still have your a/c don't you? Reason I say that is because I think your belt is a 96" belt according to your part number. I still haven't had a chance to get a photo of my belt sys. due to a messed up dig. camera but my belt was 65" long and it eliminated both the a/c and the air pump. Still working on getting a photo.

I just rerouted my belt so that it bypass the a/c and air pump. I used a 70inch belt. I just went to the track this past weekend. I gained about .10 in the 1/4 and lost about .08 on my 60ft. time. The idea of rerouting the belt works just fine.
