Can running lean cause overheating???

I just bought an 86 T/A with a carbed 305, the guy that had it before me put a remaned qjet on it and its hard to start but doesn't bog when I give it more gas, bogs at WOT on the road, and it seems like the harder I run it the hotter it gets. It doesn't have any black smoke or deposits coming from the tailpipes so I'm just guessing its running lean. I what should I do? I don't know what to do??? Oh and the choke seems to stay open all the time this is what it looks like from a cold start.

The harder you run it the hotter it gets. All cars are like that.

And yes, running lean can make it hotter. How much hotter are we talking about? If you stomp on it and then come to a stop, then the needle shoots up 10-20 degrees, that's probably normal. This is why you don't race around and then just shut your car off, it'll overheat.

pull a plug on each side of the engine. check the color, tan is the ideal color

White means it's running lean.

Black and sooty means its running rich.

Have you checked your timing? My car would heat up very quickly when I ran it hard. My timing was off. Now since I have curved my distributor to 36 degrees by 3000 rpm it stays cool. My initial timing is 10 or 12 I can't remember. Also, do like RJR99SS says and check the plugs but my guess is timing.

Oh, another thing to check is the lower radiator hose. Make sure it isn't collapsing when you rev it up. Some lower hoses don't have the spring in them to keep it from collapsing.

yeah could be the timing, also too rich or lean, might need to get that choke fixed also.. sounds like you at least have it narrowed down.
