If I remember correctly, I was able to put in 15.2 once, but I was really running on fumes when I did that. Normally, I'll put in 14 or so, but our gas gauges suck, so who knows when your actually on E?

Mine holds 16 plus a little when it's empty. The guage even has 0 to 16 gallons on it. Between 82 and 92 some different tanks were produced, some with baffles, some without, etc...

Fuel injected cars have a 15.5 gal capacity. Carbureted cars WITHOUT an intank pump have a 16.2 gal capacity.
The tanks themselves are all the same size.

Officially, they may hold 15.5. But that also doesn't mean tha tyou can always get it all out. The pickup doesn't come equally close to the bottom in all tanks.

General rule of thumb is that you can't burn the last gallon... These tanks seem to be the last half-gallon, probably because of their oddball shape.

Wrong. I can pull out my 1984 owners manual which shows 16.2 gallons for all engines except the TBI Iron Duke. That one was 15.5. Guess what it said in 1983? TBI 4 cyl and Crossfire were 15.5... all others were 16.2.
It has nothing to do with baffles or any other part other than the in tank fuel pump. The pump takes up approximately 0.7 gal. The baffles take up so little volume as to be negligable.

Don't make me take pictures of my owners manual...
FYI, in case you're curious, my car used to hold 16 gallons. Now it only holds 15.5. I installed an in-tank electric pump.
Same tank.

call it 15 gal, I know in mine once I get down to 3 or 4 gallons in the tank I start getting really bad fuel starvation even in mild corners

Funny, I don't have this problem. I heard tell one person said it had to do with some doohickey on top of the motor called a carbumorater which has some fancy part in it called a "float bowl".
Well we BEAT THIS SUBJECT TO DEATH! So if you have to put 15.5
or 16.5 gals of fuel in your gas tank you waited to long and your out of gas the same way as this Topic. .:lala: :lala:

Just filled up last night and put 11.2 gallons in, the fuel gauge was reading on empty hehe. Plus there was this black mustang there with huge wire rims in the style of that one green mustang on Monster Garage. The guy had his hood open for some reason, slammed it down and his alarm went off

When my gas tank went bad, i bought an auto store replacement part for it and it somehow had an increased fuel capacity their computer said so and the box did too under capacity. I believe it holds 17 gallons. and yes it was a **** to install compared to the removal of the stock. The straps did not want to fit at all.

Hey does anyone know of a method to make the gas gauge more accurate? I mean, besides getting a new gauge and sending unit. How about the 4th gen tank swap... Ive been reading about that. Is the sender in that tank more accurate, hence making the gauge more accurate? Anyone know?

I doubt it. The sender in my Hawk is not terribly better than the NEW sender in my 84 Camaro. Both are quite a bit better than the original sender in the 84, though.
GM is too cheap to use a fancy sender to compensate for the odd shape of the gas tank, so there isn't much you can really do.
What steams me is the gauges are ALL controlled by the ECM on 99 and newer cars, and they couldn't be bothered to put a simple correction table in the hardware. I know they could have done it, too, because that's how they got the temperature gauge to read 210 exactly any time the temp is between 180 and 220...

Hmm I always thought that was a safety mechanism. I don't want to know how many people would be getting stranded cause they ran out of gas, cause when the gauge hit empty it was being acurate and actually meant it
I think pretty much all cars even when they say empty still have about 3 gallons of usuable gas in the tank so you can get to the next gas station hopefully.
