3.42 or 3.73 for 89 s-10

yea my bro wants me to put 3.42 gears in his s-10 which currently has 2.73, hes got a 300 horse 327 in there and also needs gas mileage for a consideration so i picked the 3.42 over 3.73 for him....... what kind of difference would he be seeing..... i had 2.73 with the 305 but never 3.42..... never drove nething with that ratio b4 plus when i moved up i had a new motor so i couldnt really properly guage the change..... most importantly... will it kill mileage.....and how about *****....

My '96 S-truck has 4.10 gears, and I'm looking to go down to at least 3.43. With a 327 winding up in front of th etrans, a 3.42 or 3.73 wouldn't be inappropriate, but it certainly won't need anything taller in a 3,300 pound vehicle.
