Have a Timing Advance question-

I read in the tech article "Non C.C. HEI setup for performance" that putting a crane advance and weight kit will get the desired timing to come in at 800 rpm and all be in at 2800rpm. He says to use 1 heavy spring and 1 medium spring.

Here's my question: I used a Spectre advance kit and I used both the light springs. I don't know if the Crane kit is the same. Is it??? Do the springs have the same values??? Is the light spring in my kit the same as the light spring in the crane kit, and so on??I was thinking that I am getting all of my timing in to fast and that's why my motor either bogs or just annihilates the tires.

He says in the tech article to use 1 blue spring and 1 silver, my kit has black, gold and silver springs. On the chart on the back of the little kit, it has a chart that has the curves on it, using anything other than the lightest springs, it appears that the full 20 degrees won't come in, but with the light ones, it gets 22 degrees (or so it appears.)

What should I do, I'm gonna play with it tomarrow???

Cmon' Guys!!!

I have a very important question about my above statement.

I want to just tinker with the springs to see which ones I like best.....as long as the springs will all give me the right amount of advance.

Are most springs in the advance kits gonna give me a full 24 degrees????

I just read an article that says that this is true, just that the stiffness of the springs determines when the timing is all in. I know that, but I need to know if they will actuallly all give me 24 degrees. It looks like I can only get 24* on the little chart on the package for the product.

In the tech article on THIS site, it says that all distributors give you 20*.

Can someone who knows thier stuff clarify for me????

Your timing is probably OK. If the timing is coming in too fast, you will get a ping (pre-ignition). Verify your timing is working correctly. What is your base timing and total(at 3000 rpm)? Your max advance depends on the distributer, and can vary from car to car. Having the timing come in as fast as possible is a good thing in most cases--the main reason for having a timing advance is because starting and slow idling is a problem with high advance.

What should you do?
Verify the timing at idle and at 3000 rpm(post the results if you want our opinions), then look elsewhere for the bog problem if all is good with the timing.

Today's results.

I took one light spring out and put in a medium spring. So now I've got 1 light and 1 medium. Then I advanced the base up from 12 to 14*. Running better. I did not get to fiddle with the carb cause it started raining but, I got 1 run in on the Gtech 0-60, and the timing adjustment cut 1/2 a second of just my 0-60.

Oh yeah. I guess I was blessed with a good distributor when I got it from the junkyard cause the vac advance canister has a 10 on it for the amount of degrees advance it gives= exactly what I need.
