That was weird it didnt post my message but here it is again, see if it makes it.
I just recently got done putting a new starter in and the same day the power brake booster bites it. I beleive it is the culperate, when i hit the brakes they are very stiff and not very responsive, also i can hear a hissing like a vacum line is disconnected. I checked the line that goes from the plenum to the booster and it looks fine. I went to get one from a checker and they wanted $109 for a remanufactured p.o.s. so i think ill go to the junkyard this weekend. Need to know what years will work on my 86. Its got 4 wheel disc and the master cylnders fine. Also its causing my engine to stumble at complete stop with the vacum leak. Is there any quick fix i can do that will last me until the weekend, i need to be able to get to work and back but i dont usualy get off until after 6. What would happen if i were to plug the line that goes from plenum to booster? it will stop the vacum leak but will i have any breaks at all? It does throw a code but im not sure what the # is because i dont have a code reader deal.
Would appreciate any input. Thanks

now I am on the top?
what gives?
oh well......
I saw a post with nothing between the two solid blue lines......
This is a little disconcerting. The board is getting a little "flaky" again. I've posted several replies today that returned an error message (like they never completed sending up the text), and when I went back to check, the replies were there every time except once.
This is a little reminiscent of "Black Monday" a couple years ago. Perhaps a million posts isn't such a good thing after all?
According to the board logs, d4nk posted this thread, but the same board software reports d4nk's last post on 12-03-2002. This might not be good....
I'm mailing Dirk just for grins.

I don't know about the source for a replacement, but almost any good salvage yard should have an interchange guide that will show compatibility. I'm guessing that the booster is not very unique, and the big difference between your 4W disc and disc/drum is in the prop valve and master cylinder, not the booster.
As for the "quick fix", this may be a little unorthodox, so consider the option at your own risk.
This "fix" may prevent your stalling until you can replace the booster. Remove the vacuum line from the check valve on the booster. Install another temporary section of line about 4" long. Between this line and the original, install a PCV valve with hose clamps if necessary. The valve pintle will restrict the flow of air, but will allow vacuum to the booster's reservoir, albiet at a much slower rate. Your other option would be to assemble a restrictor of sorts with reducers and smaller hoses, to effect the same kind of restriction.
WARNING: This method will cause the brake booster to fill slowly with vacuum, so the brakes may not have any assist at startup, or after repeated application of the brakes. You'll only get one good boost, then the reservoir will take time to evacuate again. If the brakes feel even the least bit unsafe, park the car until you can repair it properly.
