the fronts are easy, can change them out in 20 mins or so. Th rear drums are kinda a pain. Those will take you a little longer. Overall, if you ahve a good manual or if youve done them before, their about a two, maybe a three. I suspect its probably just your front pads but the shoes on the drums should be changed too.

oh, id aviod doing the drums yourself if youve never done them before, the return springs can be quite difficult to get off the first time you do a set of drums.

Do they squeek till you apply the brakes? If so, then it's the pads.

My guess is that the pads are probably all ok. You just have a squeal. Is the squeal most noticeable when braking lightly and/or right before you come to a stop? That's a common brake squeal. When the pads are worn out completely they will squeal constantly when you Don't have the brakes applied. The best thing you could do is pull the wheels and check the pads for wear(inner and outer). Then pull the drums and check the shoes for wear. If you don't know what you are looking at, take it to someone that does.

DA,

Well, the car was built with rear brakes, so if you don't have them, someone has been busy sabotaging your car.

Noise on brake application is a sign of glazed or worn friction material in the brake linings, or overheated/damaged rotors or drums. I'd be checking them very soon. Start by removing a front wheel so you can inspect the rotor and pads. It's easy to see just how worn the pads are without disassembling anything on the brake caliper.

Sometimes, if the pads aren't tight in the caliper they can cause a squeal that you describe. I've also seen some people apply some antisqueal goop between the pad and caliper--but if you have it that far apart you might as well replace the pads, and the antisqueal stuff doesn't always work. If Midas thinks the rotors need turned, have them price new rotors. It may be worth the extra money to just replace the rotors. The same applies to the drums/shoes on the rear--drums are usually pretty cheap to just buy new.

Brakes

Brake job's are 9 times out of 10 very straight forward. If you have an older brother, father or friend that could lend you a hand that would help alot. Things to keep in mind..If the pads have worn into the rotor they will need to be turned. Same goes for the drums. Brake fluid in good shape?? Very easy to drain and flush system. Usually all you will need is a good set of sockets a large "C" clamp some brake cleaner and something cold to drink......Take your time and have fun. Do me a flavor thou and do not take your car to Midas..I put them in the same category as Pep boys..Later and have fun.

Buy a book. Do it yourself. It will be the best brake job you ever bought. Too many tricks to go into to replace brakes. I can do my fronts 10 min a wheel with the car on jack stands. The rears are much more difficult, but fortunately do not wear out as fast.
