Vortec head castings

Rather then paying the ridiculous prices for a set of complete vortec heads from sdpc I was thinking of trying to get a used set from a chevy truck or whatever. Are there different castings for vortec heads, and does it matter which ones I look for?

There are two 350 vortec L-31 heads to look for
the casting # end in 906 or 062.
There is a 305 L-30 vortec motor.
These 305 vortec heads have casting #059 and have L98 shaped chambers, vortec shaped and sized ports but smaller
1.84 intake valves and 58cc chambers.
May have good potential with bigger valves etc.

Any used truck vortec head should be inspected for cracks
as these truck motors shouldn't be worn out yet (Mileage).
But may have been abused, shortening their usefull life.

There is no real savings to buying junk yard vortecs as they will surely need work. Maybe more than you think.
You may be able to locate good used vortec heads off a
hiperf motor that some one wants to step up to a bigger
alumium head. These heads should/ could be in real good condition with all the nessessary upgrades already done.

Professional Products just released 2 new Vortec type intake.
In addition to their "Cyclone" Power plus+ Vortec (performer clone)
they've added a "Crosswind" vortec (RPM airgap) clone
and a "Hurricane" single plane race verson ( Dart) clone.
These manifolds are as good or better than E******K.
Priced under the competition too.

Thanks for the info, though I'm plannin on using the heads for a TPI setup. What kind of upgrades should I look for to already be done?

I got mine off ebay and they only had about 30,000 miles on them. No need in machine work on the valves if you do that.
