What does an Oxygyen Sensor do?
Just wondering what this does, or is for... I think the one that was or is on my car is broken (Its either that or somthing else that I have no clue what it is). And I was wondering what kind of an effect it can have on the way the car runs. I apologize if this is an inane or stupid question, but I can't find it in the haynes book and I can't find anyone who knows.
Thanks guys!

The simple answer: It senses oxygen (but you already knew that).
The long answer: It senses oxygen because the oxygen level in your exhaust has a direct correlation to how rich or lean you're running. The computer takes the oxygen sensor information and adjusts the fuel mixture to keep the car running within a precise window near stoichiometric (sp??) combustion (which is around 14.7:1 with pump gas). If the sensor is old, it can get lazy, and is slow to respond. This causes the computer to have a hard time keeping it at stoich. It can result in poor drivability, lousy gas milage and excessive emissions.
