Head decision...

I'm trying to decide what heads to put on my 400. It has the crappy 882 heads (76cc) on it right now. A buddy of mine is STRONGLY suggesting Vortecs, says I'll pick up a LOT of grunt with 'em. I know I'd have to get the steam holes drilled. How much would that cost? Any other ideas for heads? Thanks in advance.

You can drill the holes yourself using a 400 head gaskets as a template.

The Vortecs are hardly out-of-the-box performance bolt-ons. That is doubly true if you have a "typical" performance cam. Chevy High Performance magazine did a recent article on what needs to be done to Vortec heads. Don't forget you need a Vortec-specific intake manifold.

You might want to consider Pro Lightning heads as a cost-effective, ready-to-bolt on (except for the steam holes) alternative.
