Tonight a couple freinds and I where painting my motor.First of all we found no ridge in the cylinder.So I was happy.So then we cleaned the crap out of it.And painted it with a nice glossy coat of chevy orange.Then I pulled the oil pan to check the main bearings.And found out it is a 4 bolt main.Which made me happy.Then I got to looking for another harmonic balancer and the one of my 307 for my 69 camaro is alot smaller.In another post a guy said the heads I have are stock 400 heads.So this got me wondering.

The casting # on the side of the block is .379.So do I got a 400 or not?Also I checked the bore and it is 4.00 inch.

Well i went out and looked again.The real casting # is 14016379.Which I looked up and found it to be a 78-79 truck and light passenger car.The same site also says it isn't a 4 bolt though.Which it is.Hmm.A mystery.

 

I looked it up on www.mortec.com , it says that it is a 77-79, 350, 2 or 4 bolt main. I guess someone put 400 heads on it.

 

the stock bore on a 400 is 4.125" and most of them have already been overbored, there are also very few 4 bolt main 400's around. with a 4.00" bore its probably a 350.

 

You have a 350 block from a pickup truck. What makes you think you have 400 heads? The 882 casting commonly used on 400's was also used on 350's. The only difference is that the 400 heads have steam holes drilled into them. If you have 882 heads then thrown them away. They're thin wall castings and are usually cracked.
