belt noise

I have a bit of chattering coming from my air conditioning belt on my '87 T/A. I tried some of the spray on belt dressing and it helped for a while. But the chattering is back and I want to cure it for good.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what causes this? Is it the belt or the pulley?

It is quite annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Remove the belt, clean off all the sheaves with mineral spirits or alcohol (on a cool engine only!), then install a new belt. When you start up, observe the tensioner to nmake sure it maintains tension and doesn't deflect too much.

Does the sound go away when the compressor is engaged? I had to replace the clutch on the compressor. The bearing was going causing little metal filings to fly everywhere.

No, it does not go away when the compressor is turned on. I think it is the belt.
