an interesting problem(part 2)
First thread is here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=143545
So over the break I installed my slp runners and did some work on my plenum, and decided to check out my drain problem. I managed to hunt it down and it was indeed my stereo, which is why the subwoofer stopped working as well. I didn't have time to fix it, so I've just got the radio on a switch to disconnect it when the car is off. So the drain is out of the picture.
On to recently.. While driving home after a two hour trip, my volt guage dropped into the red. Now this scared me, it's never dropped that low before and stayed there. Because of this, the turn signals would stay solid when activated. There were no running problems, and the car was actually running fairly cold(it's 50 degrees right now, the engine was at about 165 actual(not guage temp)). After pulling into my parking spot and shutting the car off, the guage read at the bottom of the red. After letting the car cool for less than a minute, the voltage guage read slightly above the red. I noticed that with my fan switch grounded, the fans would turn on with the ignition turned off. I never remember that happening, sometimes I leave the switch grounded when I turn the car off and the fans only turn on with the ignition on.
I didn't think to do as Vader said in the last post
over the break and I left my voltmeter and test light at home. I'm not concerned about the car not running right, because this has never affected the way it's run. But it seems to have gotten worse. I've only got this next weekend to work on it if I can figure out what is wrong, so any ideas would be appreciated. I'd like to change the positive battery cable and see if that fixes the problem, but it looks fine and the wiring from it to the alternator is new. I hate electrical problems.

I wouldnt be surprised that the fan is sucking the power out of your battery they draw a lot of power. When I was working on my car I bi-passed the fan relay and within minutes a brand new battery fully charged was dead. Just something to look into

It sucks not to have a radio, but if you have a drain and you know its the radio I would disconnect it. The drain from it could be doing alot after a 2 hour trip with all the other electical systems on your car. I saw you have an amp or amps too, and im not sure how you have them hooked up, whether you have a wire from the battery with a fuse at the battery. It shouldnt take long to diconnect (all your stereo stuff) so when the car is running the drain problem is not affecting anything. Even though your alternater is new I would have it rechecked by a shop that rebuilds them. I was told on mine (88 Formula 350) even though it shows to charge something on it (forgot the name) can be bad.
I took out the amp and subwoofer, they are no longer causing problems. The drain makes no difference when the car is running because, and I had the fans and radio turned off when this happened.
