backfire..egr? exaust leaks?
sometimes when i take off my car back fires.. sounds like its coming frm the tbi. i just recently baught and installed a new open element air filter and it seems to be backfiring a little more than usuall. I heard that it might be my egr valve making it back fire.
I've also heard exaust leaks can make it backfire.
I changed the head gaskets a while back and when i put the exaust manufolds back on i couldnt get all of the bolts real tight due to the extreme enging space( or lack there of ). upon inspection i couldnt hear any leaks from the manifolds but i think my pipes are cracked a little twards the end of the y pipe. it sounds like exaust if coming out of there. any ideas?
also on a side note: the bolt that screws into the TBI that holds the air cleaner lid on with the wing nut... that s shaped bolt thing.. well its severly stripped. does any one know where i could get another one of those things?
thanx

Mine does the same thing from time to time. But it has always been ignition related. Cap, rotor, or wires. When I put my open element on I made a new hold down rod from a piece of threaded rod the same size and thread. Just bent it to match the curve of the old one. It lets you make it whatever length you want.
Check your cap rotor and wires first. If they're ok start looking at the other stuff
