88+ Vette heads have the D exhaust port.
I'm looking into Vette heads for my new 350.... I've got Hedman headers and was wondering who has had trouble and or success with headers on this D port exhaust of these heads.

My heads are pretty heavily ported and I've got edelbrock headers. I think you'll be fine.

I'm not a big fan of the Vette heads but all the usual headers will bolt right up to them, no problem, no leaks. Be careful of the angled plugs, though- they might not work with all header configurations.
Is there any way to find out if they will work?

i have hooker headers on my vette heads and there's no interference. it's hard to get to the plugs to change them, though.

i have some vette heads on my 305 with edelbock headers and they fit fine.....and the heads are for sale!!!!

I've never actually seen any headers interfere with the angled plugs before. I suspect we'd see someone post about it if any of the popular headers interfered.

my friend has the l89's with the edelbrock TES headers and tehy dont interfier but he says the plugs are impossible to change w/o removingthe headers.

I have the same heads with some decent porting and the hooker headers fit just fine. I just had the heads redone and will be gettng rid of them too. I was going to reuse them, but bought a set of AFR's instead.

Yeah I have the TES headers too, and the plugs are about the worst hassle I've ever had... takes nearly an hour to change them. That's ridiculous.
I doubt the shape of the port will create much trouble for you, once the header flange is covering it up. About the worst thing I can think of happening is that you'd need to pay attention to what gasket you use.
My heads are double-humps with a little port work, no fit problems there even with the small-tube headers, as long as I use the right gasket. The small round port ones don't even cover the whole port.

I need a pair of heads that I can get ported... or may already come ported that isn't going to make my pocket book crumble... and isn't going to make my compression ratio less than say 9 to 1

And how do I find out my comp ratio dependent upon the heads?

I didn't mean to discourage you from getting the alluminum L98 heads, I just wouldn't spend a great deal of money on them compared to other options like porting your 305 heads and enlarging the intake valves, or gettting some brand new S/R Torqures and porting them, or some new Iron Eagle 180s and porting them, and so on.Originally posted by Twilightoptics

If you can get the "vette heads" cheap and they already come with screw in studs and guide plates then that may be the best deal. Their just not the best flowing stock heads around. I'm sure some people may disagree with me here but looking at the many flow figures that exists on the L98 alluminum heads and comparing them to the 305 flow figures some members of this board have seen even in stock form they don't beat the 305s by much. And after porting the 305s and adding the 1.94 intakes they probably don't out flow them. But keep in mind the 305 heads may need more work for a higher lift cam.
Then there is the vortec option. But if you are keeping your TPI the added cost of the new manifold may push that option over the budget. http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...tart&catid=222 Scogging Dickey now has already prepped for higher lift cams Vortec heads and head and manifold kits. I have also seen many ebay deals on them that are pretty cheap.
If that motor has dished pistons, which it probably does if they are stock, you need to stay under 70 cc chambers to stay above 9 to 1 in compression. 72cc heads would put you in the 8 to 1 area. The L98s, the 305s, and the vortecs all are under 64ccs. And most of the after market heads give you the choice of 64cc chambers.
