LT1 cam

would an lt1 cam be a direct swap into my car? What would I need to do it. And would I be better of with a comp cams 262xe or the lt1? Assuming im getting head work done in the future.

That's like comparing "apples" to "fruit". Which LT1 cam are you asking about? There were at least six factory grinds.

And "head work" is a little ambiguous. Do you plan only port matching, bowl porting, larger valves, porting and valves, chamber work, milling?

If you are planning to go with larger valves and ports, a little less lift can accomplish the same end. Granted, the 305 is more limited on valve size selection, so you might have to get all your flow with porting and a cam profile. In that case, the LT1 grinds are probably going to be disappointing.
