To the gods of camaros pleaze help
Hey guys, i jsut got the 89 maro back from the local shop. Well the wire from the starter to the steering column had burned apart. WEll i got a few questions for u all. K i bought the camaro about 3 months ago. It has a new gm crate engine in it and it is carbed. The guy who put it in gutted out the computer and spliced wires together. Its not rigged or nuttin and the guys at the local shop say it was done good. Its jsut that when summer rolls around up here in chicago, they say i might have big problems with the wires corroding and/or buring and it can get real expensive. So my question is what do i do about this? Do i change the car over to tpi w/ a new harness and stuf(real expensive and i dont know how t do it so i want to avoid that if possible) or put a cowl hood on or sumthing to reduce the heat. Well i odnt even know if that will work it already has a fan in it too(one he put it and hell i dont even know if/ or how to work it) So if u guys could help i love this car and i would forever be in debt to u thanks adios.

How where the wires spliced together? If he used crap like wire nuts or electrical tape then you might run into some problems. I did. Previous owner had a love for wire nuts and cheapo electrical tape. I went back through and resoldered all the wiring together properly and used good quality shrink-rap to insulate and seal the connections and bundled it all together neatly.
question back
Thanks, but i was wondering how much did it cost to do that? i am not very good with cars so i dont think i could do that if i went to a local shop what u think that would cost? also, would re-doing the wiring make this problem go away or jsut prolong it. any good ideas
solder is only a couple bucks, soldering irons run about 10-50 depending on quality (just get one capable of 30W or more for car use). heat shrink can be bought from lowe's / home depot for something like $.75 per foot (you only need an inch or two per connection).

You could practice soldering + insulating scrap wire to get the hang of it. Dont bother with a shop, theyll probably do a crappy half-assed job doing the connections. After a little practice, youll get good at getting the solder to properly penitrate the connections and getting the heat shrink sleeves to contract w/o burning them. I use a small pen torch (carefully, of coarse) instead of a blow drier, which takes too long.

i think this shop is feeding you a line....
metal doesnt rust from heat and if some wire is going to burn when it's 80 degrees out it'll also burn when it's 30 degrees out. if they said he already did a good job the first time then why would you redo it? you should find out if your fan is working and how to turn it on, just trace the wire from the fan motor and see if they go to a switch or maybe to a power source on the fuse box
