Proper pistons

Can you use 5.7 pistons on 6.0 rods. Now with standard deck the math figures out the piston would pop up .003". Can I use a thicker gasket or can I have the pistons cut. I am just wondering because I found a great deal on a set of pistons but I have 6.0 rods. Thanks.

Tim,

A +.003 deck height is not a significant problem with the right gaskets. As always, you'll want to check valve clearances, and of course you'll have to watch any ridge issues with the rings. I suppose you could cut the tops, but that's so little it wouldn't be worth the setup.

265" L99s used longer rods from the factory, but they adjusted the piston pin bosses accordingly.

Looks like you guys are both victims of the Dancing Decimal Point

The difference in length between 6.0" and 5.7" rods is .300", not .030". So they would stick out of the top of the block about .275" or so with a block of typical stock deck height, not .005". I don't think they make head gaskets thick enough to hide that.

Glad somebody caught that. And the funny part is I have a college degree LOL. Ok now have anohter question. I am having problems with detonation and broken rings, again. I have about 10.2:1 comp with fuel injection and alum heads. But the cranking compression is 220psi, which seems high. Does this seem high? and are those 2 independent of each other or would a high cranking compression cause detonation?

220 seems high, but I have seen it before, cranking compression has a lot to do with what cam your running, you need to post more engine details and maybe someone can help you better.
