Few Basics with a 350TPI question...
Hello all. I'm new to the boards here, I've done some looking around, but I've got a few specific questions.
I just bought a 1987 IROC-Z with the TPI350 (stock) and the TH700. First, I'm wonder what kind of quarter mile times I should expect stock. I should note it does have the BorgWarner 3.27's and a 3" Flowmaster Catback system. I'm hoping at least mid 14's... to much to expect? Also, is the flowmaster catback helping my power out much from bone stock?
Now, I've heard about doing some kind of shim with a quarter to raise the fuel pressure... how exactly does one go about doing this... and what kind of gain, if any can be expected. What about the throttle body coolant bypass, its obvious how to do it, but can much of a gain be made. Also, a CIA would probably be helpful... how much would I look to spend on one, and where can I find them for sale. Obvious, before I go doing these little things to the car, I would make sure she's all tuned up properly, plugs wires, cap, etc.
Thanks for all the great help and advice in advance. These are some great boards!! :hail: :hail:

u can expect 14.70's with a good 60', but u should get 14.80@95.
about the fuel pressure . u have to get an ajustable fuel pressure regulator. (afpr)
my advice is get a fast pack from TPIS. they are one of the best with tpi's
itz like 300.
it comes with
wires and plugs
afpr
air foil
new air filter's (better than K+N)
after this u should see 14.5@96
oh and that flowmaste catback is allways a good thin, it does boost power over the stock unit- ur stock unit is 2.5" and the flowmaster is 3". a nice improve ment.
also headers and runners would be helpful.
if u order the fast pack get the "insider's hit" book, its filled with tones of useful infromation on how to make more power from ur tpi.

The famous 'quarter mod' involves splitting the pressure regulator and putting a quarter between the housing and the spring. This effectively raises the pressure of the incoming fuel. The arguement is that higher pressure helps in atomizing fuel, but usually it will just make your car run pig rich. Dont waste your money on TPIS, theyre overpriced. Your best bet is headers, converter, gears and sticky tires. Id do plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil first, youll maximize your mods if your car is in tune. Average stock times for L98 cars are high 14s, maybe mid 14s depending on traction.
home made cold air intake
your lucky to have a TPI Camaro because of the intake design...you can cut the bottom of the air filter housings and run some 4 inch aluminum ac duct behind yur fog lamps and drop some K&N filters in there and you have a very cheap and effective Ram Air / Cold Air Intake design...with that you should feel a better throttle response.....AARON

These are some sweet tips guys, thanks for jumping right on this post. I thought the quarter thing might be a little too imprecise... but it was worth asking. The graph of HP and Torque vs. Fuel Pressure in the FAQ looked like there are some pretty amazing gains to be made with just fuel pressure... but I've heard that chart is bogus... something like its actually testing done on a 305 w/ headers, and some other work... including a chip designed to work with the higher pressure. Anybody know anything about that?
Also, is the Throttle Body Bypass a good idea. Can a decent gain be expected? It would be a nice couple of free horse power, it makes sense that it would warm the incoming air, expecially at lower throttle openings.
About headers... how much would I look to spend on a decent set, and how hard is it to drop a set in. Also, how much of a gain can be expected.
Chips... I've done some reading on the chip boards, and found out that most of the aftermarket chips ie Hypertech and Jet, are garbage... they are almost exactly like the stock chip, with a few changes in timing advance, and fan on temps. My question is does anybody, like a person here on the boards, make a decent chip that they sell. Maybe they have a service where they will program one in accordence with your mods. I would love to get into the chip tuning and all... but its at least a $250 investment... and its a little over my head. I could learn, but I'd rather just spend a few bucks and get a chip from somebody that really knows what they are doing.
Finally... torque converter. This car is deffinalty my only car now, and a daily driver... so is a higher stall going to affect drivablity. What about gas mileage.
You guys are great... such a wealth of information here... thanks for all the replys already, and thanks in advance for all the future ones. Great info.

they are a little over priced , but there prices are still better than every shop that is near me.i was pricing out headers (edelbrock tes headers)
tpis-325
summit-320
s+k speed-395
rayco III-389
legal limits-400
the last 3 are local speed shops.
i didn't get the fast pack, but i should of.
give them a call and they will tell you what the next step is for your car with the cash you have. i am more than willing to pay 10 extra for something that i know will work,
edelbrock makes a *** dollar value heades, they fit very well.
i've installed them on a 87 tpi iroc with little hassale.
i've also installed slp headers- these aren't so easy and will run you about 550 when done, the edlebrock 350. also i would get a 2000-2200stall converter. unless u plan a cam swap. then get something like a 2400 stall. depending on how radical of a cam you put in.
about the chips, i have a chip from TPIS. i must agree formularpm, i payed about 500, but i felt a huge gain along with improved gas milage. i got a LVL3 prom. , itz a lil to much for my car in its current state, but i don't want to have to buy another when itz time to upgrade,
