What happens when the pickup coil is reversed?
Hey Guys,
So I was dumb and might have switched the two wires that run from the pick up coil to the ignition module. I thought the ignition module might be suspect so I went to get it tested and forgot to make note of which wire went where. If the wire were swapped, what would the symptoms be? I would almost be inclined to say that there woudln't be a difference considering the pick up coil just tells the engine when to fire. If it's a magnetic pickup, then when the magnet rotates around, it would do the same thing whether the coil was wound one way or the other. THe only thing I can think of is the polarity of the signal might be reversed. Please let me know if you have any information. Thanks.

Correct, the polarity will be reversed. It sees a pulse that has a slowly rising edge, then as it passes the tooth the pulse swings rapidly to the opposite voltage, creating a very sharp edge, then the voltage decays back toward zero as it waits for the next tooth lineup to occur.
The car may not run at all, and it may run but really terrible. It won't damage anything. If you put it back together and it doesn't run, just try reversing them; if it runs right, then ..... it runs right, and you should leave it alone.

uumm... i just replaced my pickup coil in my 89 and the two wires went into one clip that would only hook up one way into the module... did you take the wires out of the clip or something??
should be that it can only go one way into the module...

Do you remember which wires went to which? Right now I have the green wire on the "N" (or farthest from the dist shaft) and the yellow wire on the "P". Now that you mention it, the connections on the wires look like they were the terminals that would fit inside some kind of housing but the ignition module doesn't have a recepticle to receive the connector so I'm not so sure your GTA is the same as my TA. Too bad I wasn't fortunate enough to have the connector. Thanks though.
