Can I use balancer puller for power steering pulley?

I have a harmonic balancer remover and was wondering if I can use it to remove my power steering pulley. If not, what type of pulley puller should I use? Where to get one?

I tried to use a regular puller to remove the p.s. pulley. I had no luck and I tried for a couple hours.

The puller I wound up using was a special one with a two piece collar that clipped onto the groove on the front of the pulley. It took an incredible amount of force to remove it- it galled the shaft on old pump. I never would have gotten it if I didn't have the right tool. It is off a 100,000 mile motor so it is older, but dang, it was tight.

Don't try to pull on the outer radius of the pulley- you can bend or break it.

Might be able to rent one from a parts store, maybe. I have a firiend who is a mechanic, so it was no problem for me.

Also remember not to hammer the pulley on the new pump. Use the supplied tool (usually comes with one- it is just a hard bolt, washer and two nuts). If you hammer it on it will blow the seals and wreck the pump.

I never understood why they press a P/S pulley to the pump instead of just bolting it on. Not just GM but other makers as well.

You'll bend the hell out the pulley if yout not lucky with a regular puller. I have an old PS pulley in my garage that holds testiment to that fact.
You have to have that collar (ie power steering puller), cause all the force is applied at the center, and not the outside of the pulley.

That same PS pump sheave puller is used for removing alternator sheaves on many vehicles. It's worth having if you plan to do your own repairs.
