need help tuneing adjustable vacume advance

last weekend i just installed a new adjustable vacume advance canister for my distributor. the instructions didnt help at all. it said to crank it clockwise all the way, listen for spark knock and adjust it counter clockwise untill it cant be heard at part throttle...... wtf is spark knock?????? whatever it is, i couldnt hear it no matter wich way i adjusted it. so does this mean i should keep it all the way clockwise? and it says it changes the vacume "curve". what kind of a curve am i looking for? ive got a rebuilt 350 with a 600cfm edelbrock carb and a edelbrock performer intake manifold and 350 tpi heads(dont ask.....). as the instructions said, i put one heavy spring in and one medium spring in the distributor. after about 3000 rpm my engine seems to crap out. when i floor it, not much really happens, i mean the engine is screaming but the power just isnt there. it sort of stops pulling hard after 3000rpm. i dont hear any weird engine noises either at full throttle.
