help...oil leak!

i have some kind of oil leak in the back of my engine. i think i have lost about 1/2 to a full qt. of oil in the last week. my 87 LG4 LT camaro has 163000 miles on it. has anyone had this problem? and how do i go about fixing it? i checked the oil filter and its not leaking its somewhere above that. i think it may be my rear main seal. but im 18 and pretty new to engines. please help!

well since you narrowed it to the back of the engine that narrows down your selection of leaking possiblities. Rear main seal which is pretty normal and good for loosing lots of oil, intake gasket, oil pan gasket, and the pressure fitting for your oil pressure sending unit. You said it was a pretty good leak so i would be leaning more towards rear main or the sending unit... look towards the back of your intake on the drivers side.. if your lucky theres your leak.. i believe you have a 1 piece rear main seal engine because your cars an 87.. i've never replaced a 1 piece one so hopefully someone else can give ya some tips there.. it would be easiest to do with the engine out of the car or the tranny out or at least pulled back so you have room to work.

yup yup forgot bout dist, didnt think to mention valve cover gaskets cause they're kinda obvious.. but a quart is a **** load of oil to loose out of a valve cover gasket..
