I don't know off-hand how much lift that cam has, but it sounds like the valve springs are binding or the valve spring retainer is hitting the top of the valve guide.

I believe the stock springs are good to .480" lift. (although some folks even have trouble at that amount of lift on stock heads)
1.6 rockers, if installed, will make the problem worse.

If you running stock rocker arms, the slot may not be long enough and the rocker could be hitting the rocker arm stud.

Proper pushrod length is determined by watching the rocker arm contact the valve tip as engine is rotated. You want the contact to stay within the center 1/3 of the valve tip.

BTW, I live near Lake Georgetown. Might be able to swing by there on Sat to check it out if you're still having trouble with it.

What exactly are the rockers doing, that you're calling "popping off"? I have a hard time visualizing rockers behaving like, for example, a champagne bottle cork....

i got working now. i used the old rockers arms off the 305 and that was the problem. i go tsome for a '90 vette and they worked. the problem was the old rockers didnt have a guide in the tip to hole it on the spring the vette type did.

That was what I was referring to in here... the "rail tip" on the rocker.
