oil flow problems.... please help

please help me guys. i had engine problems about a year ago had to pull the engine..... well long story short its still not done. i got a used engine one year later and two crooked mechanics later my car is still 90 percent done. well it turned on and runs i was really excited but then i realized something was really wrong. i pull off the oil fill cap and and looked in and i didnt see oil flowing. no oil was coming up to the heads but it was spitting out a bit out of the dipstic tube. what could cause this. the engine was good before. oh and its a 90 305 tbi. thanks for the help.

how is the oil pressure? Is it good?

I've never peeked in the oil cap of a running engine, but I would think you can't really see if the oil is flowing through that cap hole.

It's only 4 bolts to pull a valve cover and get a good look. The gasket underneath those covers is rubber, so if you open up a valve cover, you don't have to scrape any old gasket off (PITA). It's reusable too, so it won't cost you anything to pop one and have a peek.

for the dipstik spitting, the only thing I can think of is PCV system not hooked up. That will cause your cylinder blowby to spit out the dipstick tube, and it'll bring a little oil with it on the way.

i really cant tell if the oil pressure is good because the gauge is broken......on my other engine i have seen the oil flow through that cap hole.......what do you mean about the PCV not beeing hooked up? how do i check it and to make sure what exactly is PCV system? something i forgot to mention, you know how on the passenger side valve cover you have a hose that is connected to the tbi and on the other vavle cover you have a hose that connects to the air cleaner assembly well that hose(the one that connects to the air cleaner ***.) is disconnected and when the engine is running alot of white smoke is coming out of that hose. thanks for helping

PCV is Positive Crankcase Ventilation. No matter how good your piston rings are, there's going to be some amount of blowby, and it has to get out of your engine, or your engine will start leaking out of a seal somewhere. The way it works, is on your drivers side valve cover, there is the PCV valve, which is hooked into manifold vacuum. vacuum draws air out of the crankcase here. On the passenger side valve cover, there is the tube you mentioned (connected to the air cleaner assembly). Air should go into the engine here. There should never be anything coming out that tube, except sometimes at WOT, when there is not much vacuum.

White smoke coming out that tube means there is something very very wrong with that engine. Somehow or another coolant is getting into the combustion chambers. Could be cracked cylinder head, cracked block, blown head gasket, etc. If there's only a small amount of white smoke, it could be normal condensation boiling out of the engine, but if there's alot, it doesn't look good.

get some kind of oil pressure gauge hooked up before you start it again. If you've been running it with no/low oil pressure, it's not helping matters any
