Junk engine--help design the rebuild!

Ok. It sucks, but I've finally figured out why the 350 I picked up for my 'bird has never managed to start: either the timing chain is shot, or the cam gears for the distributer are shot.

Here's your chance, gurus. Design a high power 350 block based engine for 87 octane

edit: more info: 1980 block, originally bought as a crate engine from GM, previously in a full-size Blazer or Suburban, don't remember which. Not sure what the casting #s are, and I intend to port/polish the heads used myself. I'm thinking of using the Pro Topline Vortec heads, but if I can get decent heads on the cheap, I may go that route instead

Do an internet search for the term "LT1". You'll find exactly what you need to do to make respectable power with 87 octane fuel in a 10.5:1 engine.

umm....actually, I was wanting to see how more experienced people here would build it.....it just seems better to me to have a conversation on the topic than just dig around on websites. that way, I don't have to start a dozen threads asking about this part or that, and posting things like "this website said this, but that one said that, which is right"

A block is a block as far as a street motor is concerned.

Throw those heads in the trash. You'll never get power out of them. They're not worth the abrasive to grind on them with. Catch me when I'm in a bad mood some time and I'll tell you what I really think of them.

How far are you planning on tearing this down (new pistons & rings, boring, etc.)? What kind of budget? What sort of goals do you have in mind?

as for budget, the cheaper it is, the sooner I can have it running lol......as for how far I intend to go, well....as far as I have to. I need to tear it apart and see what kind of shape the block is in and so forthfor goals.....well.....my goal is to at least match what Rock 'n Roll Engineering pulled off for Car Craft in this article using a Poncho block:

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/98359/

note: I doubt I'll be running nitrous, so I'm looking at the non-NOS dyno numbers

found out that thirdgen resource has L98 heads for $100/pair, so I'm not quite decided on what heads I want....
