Starter problems

I have a 91 rs 3.1 and the problem is that when i start my car the starter stays ingaged . And the only way i can get it to shutdown on it trying to start when car is already running is to give it gas. Would this mean the starter is going bad?

It sounds like the solenoid is sticking or the engagement mechanism is mechanically binding. There is a throwout fork and clevis pin that frequently wear and bind on GM starters. Either way, the starter has to come off. I'd advise planning on that soon - before your flywheel suffers damamge. The last time I looked at a repair kit it was about $20.00.

$20 for a repair kit vs. $35 for a starter.... and you have to do all the same work as swapping the starter, plus some more.... and as all who have run across Murphy know, you'll do the repair, and a week later something else about it will die, which will be another $20 and another R&R and more teardown and re-assembly, and you'll have more money and three times as much labor in it as you would in a whole other starter, but you'll still have your old one..... if it was me I'd just change it out and be done with it.
