how to take off crankshaft/balancer pulley???(urgent)

doing timing chain....just figured out i don't have the right size socket for the center bot on the crankshaft/balancer pulley.

anyone know what size it is?? and how the heck do you get the pulley off?? don't you just take out the center bolt? seems like it will just turn the whole pulley, and not the bolt. please let me know in a hurry...don't want to stuck here too long.
thanks

The one bolt in the center is 5/8" hex. The other 3 that hold the pulley on are 9/16" hex.

Once you get the bolts out and the pulley off, you need a harmonic balancer puller. You can "rent" one at Auto Zone and Advance and CSK for free. Then when you go to put it back together you'll need an installer, which you can also "rent".

hmmm...i just went out and checked....seems mine are not the same as yours. (could this be becasue i have a 3.1?) anyway, the FOUR outside bolts on mine are 1/2". the middle bolt, is not 5/8". my 3/4" socket fits very loosely.

i already got the puller kit.

anyays, maybe you could tell me how to take the bolts (center one in particular) out with out it just spinning the whole pulley (rather thna only the bolt)

thanks,
evan

Leave the belt on for some resistance so the whole pulley won't turn. If it still turns you can stick a prybar between the alternator fan and the bracket. That's what I did when I replaced my front seal.

Oh... sorry.... I know nothing whatsoever about the 6-cyl cars, never even touched one. I was talking about the V8s.

On my V8 car, I wedge a screwdriver between my flywheel and the starter to prevent the motor from rotating. Bolt should come off fairly easy then.
